The team mentors a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team named the “Golden Surfers”. The team is for fifth through eighth graders at the East Palo Alto Charter School (EPACS). As a part of the Golden Surfers, students build a robot using LEGOs, a task that many of them would never have imagined had they not joined the Golden Surfers. At least once a week, the Space Cookies donate time and resources to coach and encourage the team to explore science, technology, and all that education has to offer. In 2009 the Golden Surfers won the Judges’ Award.
Every fall the Space Cookies host their own FIRST FLL Tournament. The tournament invites nearly 20 teams from all over the Bay Area to compete at the NASA Ames Research Center. Because the tournament is fully student run, the members of the Space Cookies are given an opportunity to apply the leadership skills that they have learned throughout the year. Many team parents and community volunteers come together to help make this tournament a reality by providing supervision and advice.
